Course Description

The purpose of this course is two-fold. First, to teach SARTopo skills to those at any skill level and second to model the CSAR Best Practices for SARTopo mapping. This self-paced course is offered exclusively online on the CSAR Google Classroom. The course will be offered twice per year; the Spring Course will run from January 1 - June 30 and the Fall Course will run July 1 - December 31. Registration for each course, spring or fall, will open approximately 1 week prior the respective course start date.

  • The self-paced class will be offered to all member teams and agencies of CSAR.

  • This self-paced course is offered exclusively online on the CSAR Google Classroom. You are expected to have access to your own computer & internet connection sufficient to stream videos.

  • The SARTopo course will consist of: self-paced video instruction, self-paced map problems to practice CSAR Best Practices and office hours from a diverse instructor group representing teams state-wide. Office hours will be held twice per week when the instructors are in-session. During office hours instructors will hold a Google meet to provide feedback, coach students, respond to emails, and grade student assignments.

  • The instructor office hours will be scheduled in two sessions, the first month of each calendar year quarter. For the Spring Course the instructors will be in-session from January 1st - January 31st and again from April 1st - April 30th. Only during those dates, (i.e. when the instructors are in-session) will instructors hold office hours, be expected to respond to emails and provide feedback on student map problems. Students will have access to, and are encouraged to work on, the self-paced portions of the course regardless of the instructors being in-session or not.  For the Fall Course, the instructors will be in-session from July 1st - July 31st and again from October 1st - October 31st.

  • We ask that no more than 6 members per team/agency sign up to give a variety of teams/agencies access to the course.

  • The self-paced course will be available 24/7.

  • Dates and times for office hours will be clearly posted on the Google Classroom Calendar accessible to registered students. Office hours will occur twice per week during months when the instructors are in-session.

  • This class is built in four tiers of instruction designed to develop a brand new SARTopo user into a competent SARTopo mapper.

  • Each Tier has at least one map problem for the students to complete and submit to instructors for feedback.

  • The assignment for Tier 4 is a post-course survey. This survey is a required portion of the course and must be completed in order to earn a certificate of completion.

  • Students must complete the entire course by the end of their respective course. Spring Course students must complete all work by July 31st and Fall Course students must complete all work by December 31st. After those respective course end dates all incomplete progress will be deleted to prepare for the next course. If a student does not complete the entire course by their respective end date they will have to purchase another ticket and start the course over if they wish to complete the course.

  • The course will cost $50/ticket. Fees provide one CSAR member access to the self-paced material until the end of 2022 and access to the 2 instructor sessions explained above.
